DE FABIANI HOOKED UP THE TOP TEN AT NOVÉ MĚSTO

The Alpine from Gressoney finds his smile again with two excellent World Cup races in the Czech Republic, entering the top ten in the classic chase.

Nové Město, Czech Republic – Jan. 19th 2020 • Nové Město gives Defast the first two good results of the year. After the difficult start of the season, conditioned by physical problems and culminating in the abandonment of the Tour de Ski, Francesco De Fabiani regains his form, motivations and smile with an excellent weekend in the two distance races.

Saturday January 18th it took place a 15 Km F, with a time trial start, where De Fabiani grew on the distance. «I had in mind not to overdo itDefast says – however in hindsight I might have been able to start stronger, but the form was good and during the race I was lucky enough to share the effort with Kalle Halvarsson». The skier from Gressoney finished in sixteenth position the round won by Alexander Bolshunov (RUS).

In the 15 Km of Sunday 19 January, the format chosen by the FIS is the classic Gundersen calculated on the ranking of the previous day. Author of a good start, Defast immediately manages to gain positions and to brilliantly finish the race dominated once again by the winner of the Tour de Ski, with an excellent tenth place.

«It has been a positive weekend – says the Alpine – and I can say that I really got the smile on. I had excellent sensations during both days, especially on Sunday I felt very good physically. I want to thank the skimen for the excellent work done in these two days; these two races have confirmed to me that when the condition is good the 15 Km, both classic and skating, is my favorite format, or at least the one in which I express myself best».

The two Czech days seem to have blown away the clouds from a season so far stingy with satisfaction: «Finally I can say that I had a “nice” effort, certainly not like during the Tour when every climb seemed endless to me. At the end, I can say that withdrawing from Tour de Ski to do a real reset of my condition was the right choice».

DE FABIANI WORLD CUP SEASON RESTARTS FROM THE CZECH REPUBLIC

Francesco De Fabiani - Gressoney - 2019/2020 • Archive

The international adventure of Francesco De Fabiani will resume in the next weekend in Nové Město with two distance races.

Nové Město, Czech Republic – Jan. 16th 2020 • It is time to start the engines again and full speed ahead. The season of "DeFast", which got to a stop in Toblach two weeks ago during the unfortunate Tour de Ski, will resume this weekend.

The skier from Gressoney of Centro Sportivo Esercito Courmayeur was recalled by the Italian National Team to face the double event in Czech territory, in Nové Město. Two distance races are scheduled: Saturday 18th January he will join the track for the 15 km skating interval start, while on Sunday it will be the time for a new 15 km, but classic and in the spectacular Gundersen format, that means a pursuit with the gap accumulated in the previous race.

Out of the game for more than 15 days, De Fabiani comes from a rather intense training period, thanks to which the hours and kilometers of training have been remarkable, first in Toblach, where he covered an average of 60 Km per day, and then at his home in Gressoney, where he carried out the classic final workout in order to better face the incoming double World Cup rounds.

Francesco De Fabiani will be at the start together with teammates Dietmar Nöckler and Giandomenico Salvadori.

BITTER-SWEET FINLAND FOR FRANCESCO DE FABIANI

Francesco De Fabiani - Ruka - 2019/2020 • ©Modica/Nordic Focus

Difficult start to the season, but good morale for the bearer of the Centro Sportivo Esercito, due to a back strain that slowed down his preparation for the Ruka event. Next target Davos, in the canton of Graubünden.

Ruka, Finland – Dec. 01st, 2019 • It was a difficult start to the season, the one of Francesco De Fabiani. Landed in Finland at the beginning of November, the skier from Gressoney had no problem in the preparation, which indeed showed an excellent shape.

The three days of Ruka, the traditional opening of the World Cup, showed a discreet form but certainly limited by those 5 days of stop two weeks ago due to the back problem, now practically solved.

Waiting for better days, Defast has to be content with applauding the various Klæbo, first in Sprint and Pursuit and Niskanen, first in the 15 km classic. But let's get to the results: in the opening sprint classic, De Fabiani finished 23rd after a good qualifying. In the 5 km skating he paid a drop in the second part and finished 30th, while in the free pursuit he struggled and finished 32nd, with the 43rd time of the day, without obviously ever entering the fight for the top positions.

«It was a difficult start to the seasonFrancesco says – unfortunately I still don't have the form of the best days, but I think it's also normal after the problem that came at a crucial moment. If we analyze the Sprint, I consider myself satisfied because I passed the qualification without any problems and then maybe I could also pass the quarters, due to some small mistakes I made». On the distance classic De Fabiani is realistic: «In reality, I was hoping to enter the 15, instead I got far away from the top because after half the race I had empty legs and no energy». The last day certainly did not give positive answers: «Surely I could not hope to find the form in the Pursuit, it is obvious that the important thing for me was to close the three days above all in health, without back pain, which happened. The pain is still there but it has not absolutely limited me in the race».

Weather from the point of view of the results the score is poor, the skier from Gressoney has instead an excellent morale: «I feel to say that on a physical level I am not bad at all, I expected not to be brilliant, so it was, also because the problem is that the legs are the one to be definitely tired today. The condition is growing and I believe that with two weeks of training I will be able to fill the gap and get back for the World Cup race in Davos, Switzerland, where last year I was seventh in the 15 Km skating».

FRANCESCO DE FABIANI'S TOUR DE SKI ENDS IN DOBBIACO

Francesco De Fabiani - Lenzerheide - 2019/2020 • ©Modica/Nordic Focus

Dopo tre tappe difficili, l’atleta del CSE ha deciso di chiudere anzitempo la parentesi nella prestigiosa gara a tappe, con lo sguardo rivolto ai prossimi impegni in Coppa del Mondo.

Toblach, Italy – Dec. 31st, 2019 • The Tour for Defast lasted only three rounds. To influence the choice, a condition that struggles to arrive, together with the results that have been stingy in this first part of the season.

De Fabiani, at his sixth Tour de Ski (three of which ended), was in fact never really "into the race", with the exception of a good Skating Sprint in Lenzerheide, however, closed in sixteenth position.

«The feelings are not that good – says Francescoand unfortunately it is a situation that has been carrying on for over a month, since the first retirement in Finland. Since Ruka's race, little has changed, either in terms of sensations or results».

Today's race in Toblach (15 Km F interval start) did not give the right guarantees to be able to continue: «I closed far from the top, I didn't even manage to enter the Top 30 and what I feel like saying is that this is not the De Fabiani of the past year when, with a super condition, I had 2 podiums in the Tour. We are approaching the Val di Fiemme round, the 15 Km C mass start, but I am sure that with this condition I would not go that far. I believe it is absolutely useless to persevere, therefore we have decided to leave the scene in order to take a "RESET"».

What went wrong is still not clear: «Today, in the first kilometers I was doing well, I didn't even try to overdo it, I kept my rhythm but then I dropped dramatically. Let's say I'm doing the opposite of what I usually do: instead of growing in the end, I tend to drop seriously. Today, I seemed to be doing a 30 Km, instead it was a 15 Km, I was so tired».

Defast, however, hasn’t the morale on the floor: «I'm sorry, not disappointed. Now I will take a few days off and then I will start preparing 2020 again, as if we were at the beginning of the season, especially without back pain and with many motivations».

In the last few days the doubt was of having contracted a virus, but fortunately the results of the tests have been negative: «I have all the blood tests in order, no value out of range, no viruses. This is really positive for me, the season is very long, there will be the Ski Tour in Scandinavia, the Sprint Tour in Canada, of course the 50 Km of Oslo, there are plenty of opportunities of redemption. In any case, I hope to return back to the scene already at Nove Mesto, in about two weeks, I am looking forward to finding the condition».

Today 2019 is going to end, a very positive year, though: «With this race, the year ends, a year that gave me incredible emotions, with the 2 podiums in the Tour (Oberstdorf and Val di Fiemme), with second place in the World Cup in the Sprint of Cogne, with the world bronze of Seefeld obtained in the Team Sprint with Federico Pellegrino. We hope to face the year 2020 up to expectations, in the meantime I wish all my fans a stellar new year!».

THE SEASON OF FRANCESCO DE FABIANI STARTS FROM FINLAND

Francesco De Fabiani - Rovaniemi - 2019/2020

The skier of the Centro Sportivo Esercito Courmayeur flew to the North to better prepare for the imminent start of the season with very ambitious goals, despite a back strain.

Rovaniemi, Finland – Nov. 21st, 2019 • He arrived in the North a few days ago and now Francesco De Fabiani will begin the new international adventure from Finland, as usual on the last weekend of November, with the race in Ruka.

In the season 2019/2020, rich (maybe too much) of World Cup dates, even quite close to each other, DeFast planned, in agreement with the national team, the debut last weekend with an event in Rovaniemi, Finland, to prepare for the approach to the usual grand opening of the season.

«I am ready to start the seasonDeFast says – and so far the preparation has gone really well till last week, among bicycle (not too much), walking on foot, roller ski sessions, roller ski races, skiing on the glacier, now it's time to transform these hours in speed. We have already carried out the actual loading period».

Last weekend, two races were scheduled in Rovaniemi for Defast, but a back problem revolutionized the plans: «We worked on the push and last Thursday I stopped training for a back strain. In agreement with the national team we decided to rest for 5 days so as not to compromise the season».

Saturday, November 23rd, a test is scheduled with the Russians in a 15 km C, again in Rovaniemi: «It is very important above all to have a positive feedback on my health – says De Fabianieven more than the result, since I was inactive for some days».

The seasonal goal, in a year without World Championship and Olympics, is clear: «My target is the Top 5 of the World Cup ranking. I start trying to do well from the beginning, there will be 2 Tours, not only in Val di Fiemme, but also in Scandinavia and in these cases it’s important to complete them to get the points of the Cup». Speaking about the Tour de Ski, De Fabiani has also scheduled some training sessions to improve on stage of Cermis, his Achilles heel: «Back from Finland, in early December I planned to do some specific sessions on alpine ski slopes close to home, to get used to that gradient and to the effort which, as you know, is not congenial to me».

The 50 km of Oslo remains among Francesco's dreams: «Oh yes, I have Oslo in my heart and even if it will come after a hard time, I would like to be a protagonist».
