DE FABIANI CLOSES in 9th PLACE THE TOUR DE SKI
The representative of Centro Sportivo Esercito closes the Tour in Val di Fiemme within the Top 10 and draws a positive balance, together with the current 6th place in the overall standings of the World Cup.
Cermis, Italy – Jan. 6th 2019 - Francesco De Fabiani closes in 9th place the stage race which began nine days ago from Dobbiaco and ended this afternoon in Val di Fiemme at the top of Alpe del Cermis, after 9 hard kilometers which have decreed the victory of Johannes Høesflot Klæbo, ahead of Sergey Ustiugov and the brilliant Simen Hegstad Krueger, Skiathlon Olympic champion in Korea.
The race, absolutely tough, started at 2:45 pm with the climbing race which highlighted the skills of the Norwegian Sjur Roethe, 4th who scored the best time of the day.
“Defast” started with paying attention not to waste too much energy along the flat part and then in the beginning of the climb was reached by an mixed and dangerous train, from which Krueger emerged together with Roethe: «For me it was a tough race, I knew it because I particularly love this climb especially on the muscular level». Francesco is realistic: «In fact, knowing it or not is the same, I tried to save my legs at the beginning but they soon got on me and I had to fight to stay with the group of chasers. They set the rhythm and I suffered a lot. Certainly if I want to think of the Tour as a goal, it is not enough to start fourth at the last stage».
The guy from Gressoney still has clear ideas and sees the positives: «In the future I have to try to improve but we cannot really say that this Tour went wrong. Of course I wanted to improve the performance I had three years ago but I could only equal it, All in all I give myself a good evaluation, even if I bring home two amazing second places in Oberstdorf and Lago di Tesero that certainly make me happy».
The Cermis in skating just does not help Defast: «Well, of course if it was to be done in classic, perhaps with sealskins, not so many would be able to beat me, but unfortunately it is in free technique and I must necessarily congratulate Klæbo and the guys who got the podium, they were simply stronger. From a physiological point of view my legs harden after a few kilometers of ascent and this penalizes me. It must be said that maybe I should try to do targeted workouts to improve on these slopes, maybe even in summer, even if I have no idea how to prepare Cermis in the summer!».
«The podium remains a dream – says De Fabiani – but in the future I will strive to improve, because I have understood that here, on these slopes, the ground you lose, oh yes, you lose it».
However, Francesco's balance is positive: «Yes, I did a nice Tour, I'm satisfied and I take the opportunity to thank my fan club and my family, in a considerable number on the final climb. Let's not forget that I am in sixth place in the overall standings of the Cup and seventh in the distance classification: this is very positive for me».
The next race for the Italian (in green suit this year) will be in Estonia: «I will skip Dresden to be in shape at Otepää where there will be a classic sprint and a 15km: from there we will start to get closer to the world championship. With today it wraps up the second part of the season, the third part will obviously be aimed at the world championships of Seefeld in Austria at the end of February».
