FRANCESCO DE FABIANI IS ABOUT TO DEBUT
A few hours at the start of the 2018/19 FIS Cross-Country Skiing World Cup. The Alpine from Gressoney dominated the last test in Rovaniemi, outpacing several French skiers. The goal of the season is the Tour de Ski that will end at the top of the Cermis and, of course, the World Championships in Seefeld, Austria.
The XC season is coming and the bearer of the Centro Sportivo Esercito Francesco De Fabiani is ready to make his seasonal debut in Ruka, Finland, for the traditional opening event of the World Cup.
The first round of the year includes two events: on Saturday November 24th a Sprint C and on Sunday 25th a time trial of 15 km, always C.
The skier from Gressoney is confident and motivated: «I feel good; the tests confirm I am at a good point with the condition. Of course, Saturday and Sunday will be a bit of a dark horse because the value of the contenders is still not well known. Being the first match, everyone wants to do well. I’m looking forward to wearing the bib and understand my level at the moment»
The Italian Ski Team comes from a period of intense training in Scandinavia: «I left two weeks ago and we spent 12 days in Rovaniemi, which actually are right before these first three weeks of racing. If things go fine the idea would be to stay in the North until the round of Beitostolen (where there will be the 30 km F, not really "my race" and the relay, to which I’m focusing). To start immediately with a good result would be an excellent psychological help because it would mean that the road taken in preparation was the right one. Certainly the Norwegians and the Russians, who come from the qualifying competition, will face the thing differently because for them this round, as well as the next ones until Christmas, will be valid as further "qualification" for the World Championships in Seefeld».
The Finnish weekend, for these reasons, will be among those with the highest level: «Cologna and Manificat won’t be part of the game, since they delayed the debut for several reasons; the others will be there. Saturday I will race the Sprint C and I have to admit that I like a lot the final climb and I hope I can do well».
The 15 km on Sunday (a loop of 3,750 m to be repeated 4 times) will be time trial: «There will be some trains – says De Fabiani – it will also take a little luck, but that is undoubtedly my format and as I said it would be important to start in the right way».
On a technical level the Italian National Ski Team is now able to count on a new coach: «With Stefano Saracco, who I’ve already met as Under 23, we have a good connection, even though we started late in June. The season has literally "flown" between training and preparation».
The season of De Fabiani will continue with the Lillehammer Mini Tour (15 km F and Pursuit C) in a track particularly loved by him, then Davos in Switzerland. Short competitive break at Christmas before leaving for the Tour de Ski, which together with the World Championships in Seefeld will be the main goals of the season.
