GOOD START AT TOUR DE SKI FOR DE FABIANI
Francesco De Fabiani's Tour starts fine, with a good 15th place in the Saturday skating sprint and a discreet but convincing 18th place in the 15 Km on Sunday.
Toblach, Italy – Dec. 31st 2018 - It was one of the seasonal goals, the Tour de Ski, for Francesco De Fabiani. And he kicked off quite well, in Toblach, with a qualification on Saturday, December 29, grabbed on the edge with a thirtieth place, still sufficient to land in the quarterfinals.
The possibility of reaching the semi-finals has vanished, also because of some tiny mistakes, however not so decisive. In the end, De Fabiani brought home a decent 15th place in the race won by the Norwegian Johannes H. Klaebo, apparently once again at the top.
«I'm happy with the sprint, in my less congenial format – De Fabiani comments – I hit the Top 15 that could be considered the goal. In fact I repeated the placement in the same race (sprint free technique) disputed in Davos 15 days ago, so I'm satisfied, also because I had good feelings».
In the 15 km time trial of Sunday, December 30, the goal was to enter at least in the best 15, but the Alpine from Gressoney ended in 18th place, because of a slightly too fast departure, in the race that has re-proposed among the favorites of the season, and obviously of the Tour, the very strong Russian Ustiugov.
«Mindful of the race in Davos – says De Fabiani – in which I had a great seventh place, I decided to start quicker as in Switzerland when, at the start I lost precious seconds. Let's say that the tactics did not pay because in the end I paid in the final of the race and ended up struggling because of the rhythm I had at the beginning».
The timing is not negative, however, and Francesco De Fabiani is positive: «Surely it could go a little better, but we must say that the Top 10 of the day is only 13 seconds away, so we look at the glass half-full. In the overall standings I'm in 15th place and it's not bad for the first round of the TdS».
Today, December 31, the Tour de Ski observes the first day of rest, to resume tomorrow in Val Mustair with the sprint, before moving to Germany with the two distance competitions in Oberstdorf: «I will spend, as now tradition, the New Year Eve with the National Team , waiting for Val Mustair race, which will be in skating. I hope, of course, to qualify, but we shall remember that it is never that obvious. Then there will be the double stage of Oberstdorf, with the 15 km classic, which is my favorite format, but even here it is better not to give anything for granted because above all it is a long time since I do a race in classic technique. In any case, the goal is to finish the Tour de Ski within the 10th place».
The appointment is then for January 1 in Val Mustair, with the qualifications of the sprint starting at 12, then Oberstdorf on January 2 and 3, then a rest on January 4 and the grand finale in Val di Fiemme on January 5 and 6.
